What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

(Sarah Allurah Photography Style Guide)

The goal is to feel comfortable, natural, and timeless — while making sure your outfits work beautifully together.

✨ General Style Tips

  • Earthy & Neutral Tones: Think creams, taupes, browns, terracotta, sage, olive, dusty blues, soft blush, mustard. These photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you, not your clothes.
  • Textures Over Patterns: Linen, knits, denim, lace, corduroy, and cotton add depth and richness. Avoid large logos, neon colors, or overly busy prints.
  • Movement-Friendly Fabrics: Flowy dresses, skirts, and layers create natural motion in your photos.
  • Shoes Matter: Neutral shoes (brown leather, boots, sandals) blend well. Avoid bright sneakers unless it’s intentional.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Coordinating Families

  • Choose a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
  • Pick 2–3 main tones (e.g., cream + sage + warm brown) and let each person wear different variations.
  • Example: Mom in a flowy cream dress, Dad in a sage button-up and khakis, kids in soft beige/olive accents.
  • Balance Solids & Subtle Patterns
  • If one person wears a pattern (like a floral dress), keep everyone else in solid, complementary colors.
  • Avoid everyone wearing plaid, stripes, or identical outfits.
  • Layering is Your Friend
  • Cardigans, jackets, hats, scarves add personality and can be removed for variety.
  • Kids look extra sweet in overalls, chunky sweaters, or little accessories (like bow ties, hair bows, or bonnets).

👗 For Women

  • Maxi or midi dresses with movement look gorgeous.
  • Soft sweaters with skirts or jeans work beautifully for cozy vibes.
  • Avoid stiff, structured business wear unless it fits your brand.
  • Flowy sleeves, long cardigans, and layered jewelry add subtle details.

👕 For Men

  • Neutral button-ups, henley's, or textured sweaters photograph best.
  • Chinos or jeans in darker neutrals (no overly distressed or bright shades).
  • Consider rolled sleeves, layered with a vest/jacket for depth.

👶 For Kids

  • Keep them comfy — avoid anything itchy or restricting.
  • Neutral rompers, knit sweaters, linen overalls, or soft dresses always look timeless.
  • Barefoot or simple neutral shoes are great for little ones.

❌ Things to Avoid

  • Neon or overly bright colors (they reflect onto skin).
  • Big logos or text on clothing.
  • Exact matching outfits (white shirts + jeans for everyone).
  • Distracting accessories (giant bows, loud jewelry).

✅ Quick Checklist Before You Leave

  • Clothes steamed or ironed.
  • Backup outfit for kids (just in case).
  • Coordinated but not matching.
  • Layers and textures packed.
  • Neutral shoes ready.
